Place Names in the United States
February 20th, 2016
The dots below represent nearly thirty thousand towns and cities in the United States. With the input field, you can filter and highlight these towns and cities based on their name and see patterns based on geography and history. States are shaded based on the % of places within each state that match the query.
Some obvious, but interesting queries and patterns:
- Names containing Spanish articles or San and Santa are in the Southwest
- Names with British suffixes are in the Northeast, 'New England' states
- Names related to the coast are on the ocean or Great Lakes
- 'Lake' names are common in Minnesota('Land of 10k lakes') and Wisconsin
- '-ton' and '-ville' are popular and ~evenly distributed, but '-town' is weighted heavily in PA
